Holidays in Sweden with a dog: everything you need to know
Dogs are part of the family - and of course they also go on holiday with you! But a few questions quickly arise when travelling abroad: How does the journey work? Are there any special requirements when entering the country? One thing is certain: Sweden is a dog-friendly country and offers dogs and their owners a wide range of opportunities for relaxed and varied holidays. Here you will find everything you need for a successful holiday with your four-legged friend in Sweden.
Travelling to Sweden with your dog
Sweden is easy to reach by car - the ideal way for dog owners to travel. Dogs are often used to travelling by car, and with breaks in between, the journey is usually stress-free. The overland route leads via Denmark, and from the border in Flensburg it is around three hours to the Öresund Bridge to Malmö. Many dog owners are worried about the strict dog laws in Denmark, which ban some dog breeds as so-called list dogs. The good news: Travelling through is usually possible without any problems. Nevertheless, we recommend that you take documents with you that clearly confirm the breed of your dog.
If you want to shorten your journey through Denmark, you can take one of the ferries from Puttgarden (Fehmarn) to Rödby or from Rostock to Gedser. From both ferry ports in Denmark, it is only about an hour and a half to the Swedish border. One Travelling directly to Sweden is also possible: the ferries from Germany call directly at Swedish ports - you can find all the travel options on our information page.
Requirements for entry
There are a few formalities that you should observe when travelling to Sweden with your dog:
- ID labelling: Your dog must be microchipped.

- EU pet passport: This must be carried on entry and document the vaccination status.
