Sweden offers excellent conditions for a holiday with your dog: plenty of nature, peace and quiet, forests and lakes, as well as many holiday homes in beautiful rural locations. Staying in your own dog-friendly holiday home in Sweden gives you the freedom to plan your days at your own pace and spend plenty of time outdoors together.
Instead of busy hotels, crowded promenades and fixed schedules, a holiday in Sweden with your dog often means one thing above all: space. Depending on the holiday home, the forest may begin right outside your door, the nearest lake may be only a short walk away, or you may stay in a peaceful secluded location far from the crowds.
If you are looking for nature, peace and plenty of time outdoors together, Sweden offers excellent conditions for a holiday with your dog in a holiday home. The most important thing is choosing a property that really suits your dog.

When choosing your holiday home, do not only check whether dogs are allowed. The property, nearby neighbours, location, stairs, number of dogs permitted and the distance to forests or water can all make an important difference.
How much does it cost to bring a dog to a holiday home in Sweden?
At Schweden-Ferienhaus24, your dog is not charged per day. At many of our dog-friendly holiday homes in Sweden, bringing your dog is even completely free of charge.
At some properties, a one-time pet fee of up to €50 per dog and stay applies instead.

Please always include your dog when making your booking – even if bringing your dog is free of charge. The property owners need to know how many dogs will be staying, and “dogs allowed” does not automatically mean that an unlimited number of dogs can be brought to the property.

Dog-friendly holiday homes in Sweden designed with dogs in mind
Dogs are welcome at many of our holiday homes in Sweden. Some properties, however, go a step further and have been specifically designed with the needs of guests travelling with dogs in mind. We would therefore like to highlight two particularly dog-friendly holiday homes.

Paws of Idhult
Dogs are not simply allowed here – they are part of the concept. Paws of Idhult has been deliberately designed for a relaxing holiday in Sweden with your dog. Particularly unusual: up to seven dogs are welcome.
The highlight is the fully fenced garden with a fence approximately 1.30 metres high. Dog beds and food bowls are provided, while forests, walking trails and a dog-friendly swimming spot can be found nearby. Dogs stay here free of charge.

Dog training experience
Hus Jorgentorp
Hus Jorgentorp is peacefully located in the forest near Emmaboda and is particularly suitable if you are travelling to Sweden with several dogs. Up to three dogs are welcome.
Another special feature is the owner's experience: he runs his own dog training school and therefore knows exactly what matters when travelling with dogs. The holiday home has been equipped accordingly, with dog beds, bowls and two foldable dog crates available for your four-legged companions.
The natural grounds cover approximately 1,800 m², of which around 1,000 m² are fully fenced. Walking trails lead directly from the property into the forest, and Lake Löften is only around 800 metres away.
Dogs are also welcome at many other holiday homes offered by Schweden-Ferienhaus24. The right property for you depends on factors such as the number of dogs, preferred location and your requirements for the garden, surroundings and level of privacy.
Bringing your dog to Sweden – what you need to know
If you are travelling to Sweden with your dog from Germany or another EU country, there are a few important rules to follow. Your dog must be properly identified, have a valid EU pet passport and a valid rabies vaccination. In addition, your dog must be declared to Swedish Customs when entering Sweden.
Microchip & identification
Your dog must be clearly identifiable – normally by microchip. The identification must be correctly linked to the rabies vaccination and the chip number must be documented in the EU pet passport.
A clearly readable tattoo may only be accepted in certain older cases if it can be proven that it was applied before 3 July 2011.
EU pet passport
When travelling from Germany or another EU country, your dog needs a valid EU pet passport. The identification details and rabies vaccination must be correctly recorded in the passport.
Valid rabies vaccination
Your dog must have a valid rabies vaccination. After the first rabies vaccination, there is a waiting period of 21 days before your dog may enter Sweden.
If the booster vaccination is given while the previous vaccination is still valid, no new 21-day waiting period applies. If the previous vaccination has expired, the new vaccination is treated as a primary vaccination.
Declare your dog to Swedish Customs
Dogs must be declared to Swedish Customs – Tullverket when entering Sweden. If you are travelling from another EU country and meet the relevant requirements, the declaration can be completed online before crossing the border.
After completing the online declaration, you may use the green lane when entering Sweden. Keep your declaration number and EU pet passport available in case of an inspection.
Updated rules for microchips and pet passports
Since 22 April 2026, updated requirements apply to the identification of dogs, cats and ferrets within the EU. If a dog is newly microchipped in an EU country after this date, the microchip must be recognised by the competent authority in that country.
EU pet passports that were correctly issued before this date and are still valid do not automatically become invalid.
Does my dog need to be dewormed before travelling to Sweden?
No. Treatment against the fox tapeworm is currently not mandatory for dogs entering Sweden. However, the Swedish Board of Agriculture recommends treating dogs against fox tapeworm before travelling to Sweden.
Entry requirements can change. We therefore recommend checking the latest information from the relevant Swedish authorities shortly before your trip.
Dog leash rules in Sweden: Can my dog run free?
Sweden's Right of Public Access does not mean that dogs are allowed to run freely everywhere. Wildlife, grazing animals, other people and nature itself must always be respected and protected.
The period from 1 March to 20 August is particularly important. During these months, dogs must be kept under especially strict supervision and prevented from running freely in areas where wildlife is present. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency explains that in practice, this means that almost all dogs should be kept on a leash.
Even outside this period, dogs must remain under sufficient control so that they do not chase or disturb wildlife.

Many wild animals have their young during this period. Dogs must therefore be prevented from running freely in nature. In practice, this means a leash for almost all dogs.
Do not chase wildlife
Even outside the period from 1 March to 20 August, your dog must remain under sufficient control so that it does not chase or disturb wild animals.
Take care around livestock and reindeer
Keep your dog on a leash near grazing animals and in reindeer herding areas. Maintain a safe distance and avoid unnecessary disturbance.
National parks & nature reserves
Dogs must be kept on a leash in all Swedish national parks. Nature reserves may have additional or different local rules, so always check the signs and regulations for the specific area.
Local rules may also apply
Swedish municipalities may introduce additional rules for dogs in certain public places, such as public bathing areas, playgrounds or other public spaces. Always check local signs, especially at official swimming areas.

1. Is Sweden a good destination for a holiday with your dog?
Yes. Sweden is an excellent destination for a holiday with your dog. Large forests, countless lakes, peaceful surroundings and many holiday homes in rural locations provide excellent opportunities to spend plenty of time outdoors together.
Staying in your own holiday home also gives you much more flexibility. Depending on the property, you may have a garden, a secluded location or direct access to forests, walking trails and lakes.
2. What are the entry requirements for bringing a dog to Sweden?
When travelling from Germany or another EU country, your dog must be properly identified, have a valid EU pet passport and a valid rabies vaccination.
After a first rabies vaccination, a waiting period of 21 days applies before your dog may enter Sweden. Your dog must also be declared to Swedish Customs when entering the country.

Some properties charge a one-off pet fee of up to €50 per dog and stay. We do not charge a daily dog fee, regardless of whether you stay for a few days or several weeks.
7. Do I need to include my dog when making a booking?
Yes. Please include every dog travelling with you when making your booking – even if dogs stay free of charge at the property.
The owners need to know how many dogs will be staying at the holiday home. The fact that a property is dog-friendly also does not automatically mean that an unlimited number of dogs is permitted.
8. Can I book a holiday home in Sweden with two or more dogs?
Yes. Some of our dog-friendly holiday homes are specifically suitable for guests travelling with several dogs.
Hus Jorgentorp welcomes up to three dogs, while Paws of Idhult allows up to seven dogs. The maximum number of dogs permitted is shown in the individual property description.

9. Are there holiday homes in Sweden with fenced gardens?
Yes. Some of our dog-friendly holiday homes in Sweden have fully or partly fenced gardens and grounds.
It is important to check the fence height, gates and the actual fenced area. A property described as having a garden does not automatically mean that the entire plot is enclosed.
Paws of Idhult, for example, has a fully fenced garden with a fence approximately 1.30 metres high. At Hus Jorgentorp, around 1,000 m² of the property is fenced.
10. Is final cleaning included when booking a dog-friendly holiday home?
Yes. Final cleaning is included with every holiday home booked through Schweden-Ferienhaus24.
